BN- Officials from Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit are probing a serious accident on Riverside Drive West involving two motorcycles that sent a 23-year-old man to hospital.
SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon said that Windsor police officers attempted to stop a group of motorcyclists around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Riverside Drive and Ouellette Avenue.
A short time later, two of the motorcycles were involved in a collision at Riverside Drive and Campbell Avenue, Hudon said in a news release.
A Windsor cruiser sat approximately 40 feet away from two motorcycles laying flat on Riverside late Wednesday morning as three SIU investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist scoured the area, including the adjacent Riverview Park.
A red helmet sat about 150 feet from the roadway in the wet grass and other debris was strewn along Riverside between Campbell and Bridge Avenue.
Hudon said one of the motorcyclists was taken to hospital for treatment of a fractured ankle.
Witnesses said they heard a loud motorcycle sometime after midnight.
“I heard a motorcycle speeding and I heard a loud thump and he just kept speeding on after that,” said a witness who didn’t want to be named. “So I didn’t really think anything of it at the time.
“I mentioned it to the cop and they said they already knew there was a third bike involved,” said the woman who lives at the nearby Ash Grove Manor apartment building and was out Wednesday morning looking over the crash site.
“That poor biker was screaming in pain,” said another witness. “We heard that all the way into our apartments. We just felt really bad for him.”
Witnesses said emergency services were on the scene almost immediately.
Riverside Drive was closed between Bridge and McEwan avenues until approximately 1 p.m. as Windsor police rerouted traffic to University Avenue.
SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Investigators are asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to call 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1873.
