BN-NEW DELHI: A biker who had fired on a group of youths near the Siri Fort crossing last week was arrested in south Delhi on Monday night.
The man, identified as Fukran (22), was on a bike with his partner Shiraz, who was also involved in last week's shooting. Police got suspicious of their movement and tried to flag them down at a picket near Maharani Bagh. But instead of slowing down, the two sped ahead while Fukran fired on the policemen. Sub-inspector Bijender Singh was hurt on the wrist. The other policemen present at the barricade immediately radioed the incident and the duo was chased.
To get police off their tail, Fukran got off the bike and ran towards Lajpat Nagar while Shiraz sped on to New Friends' Colony. Eyewitnesses said Fukran fired indiscriminately on the policemen while running through the busy road. However, he was knocked down by a car. The policemen pinned him down and seized his pistol. "We recovered two country-made pistols, five spent and six live cartridges from the area," said DCP (southeast) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.
Fukran said he was part of a gang and had earlier committed robberies with his maternal uncle Shahjad near Bulandshahr. Recently, he shifted to Behrampur. He admitted to being involved in robberies across south and southeast district.
The biker duo is suspected to be involved in at least five such cases of robbery, snatching, firing in south Delhi in the past two weeks and another shootout on NH-24. The men usually travelled on a yellow Pulsar without a numberplate. Last week, they also targeted a group of youths in Green Park and fired several rounds in a bid to snatch a mobile phone. During this time, they robbed a couple, too, near Nizamuddin.
Police said they usually carried two loaded pistols and targeted people on Mathura Road, BRT and Aurobindo Marg. They used to drive to Delhi every night, commit crimes and flee.
A case of causing hurt to prevent a public servant from discharging duty, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy has been registered against Fukran. Hunt is on for Shiraz and other gang members.
