Sturgis Rally crash death toll up to 10

One man died Wednesday from injuries sustained in an accident near Sturgis on Saturday.

Keith Reed, 57, of West Allis, Wis., died after a crash on I-90 near mile marker 34 that involved two motorcycles and a car, the Highway Patrol said. The driver of the 2007 Pontiac G4, 40-year-old Marin Malo, lost control of it and drove into the median. He was wearing a seatbelt and had minor injuries.

While slowing down to avoid hitting the Pontiac, 58-year-old Wade Rent was rear-ended by Reed’s motorcycle. Rent and his passenger, 57-year-old Ruth Rent, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Both are from Pleasant Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada.

No one was wearing a helmet.

The Highway Patrol said 10 people have died in crashes during the Sturgis Rally. The rally officially ends Sunday.

The Highway Patrol has made 150 DUI arrests, 157 misdemeanor drug arrests and 65 felony drug arrests. Authorities have also seized $18,233 in cash and seized 12 vehicles. There have been 54 non-injury crashes and 114 injury crashes.




Previous fatal accidents at Sturgis 2015

- At 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, Michael Weissman, 44, of Glendale, Ariz., was driving northbound with a passenger on US Highway 385 at the Sheridan Lake Fishing Pulloff. As the group he was riding with started to turn into the Sheridan Lake Fishing Pulloff, Weissman lost control of his motorcycle. Both the driver and passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The passenger, Destiny Smith, 31, also of Glendale, Ariz., was thrown into the southbound traffic lane where she was hit by another motorcycle. Smith was killed. No helmets were used and alcohol was not a factor.

- Gregory Bullard, 45, of Fort Collins, Colo., died after being thrown from his motorcycle one mile south of Lead on Friday, July 31. He was riding a 2005 Harley-Davidson on U.S. Highway 14A when he lost control going around a curve at 6:11 p.m. He hit a signpost and was transported to Deadwood Regional Hospital, where he died of his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

- An Ohio man died in a crash Saturday, Aug. 1. The Highway Patrol said William Carter, 65, of Seville, Ohio, was driving a 2001 Harley Davidson Softail motorcycle northbound on Canocker Canyon Road south of Galena Road when his motorcycle left the road while navigating a curve. He was not wearing a helmet, and he died at Sturgis Regional Hospital. Alcohol is not believe to be a factor.

- At 11 a.m. Sunday, a motorcyclist died after a GMC Sierra ran into her in a construction zone west of Murdo. Rhonda Denato, 49, of Ottumwa, Iowa, was thrown from the motorcycle and later died. The driver of the Sierra, Randall Miller, 55, of Mount Vernon, was arrested on charges of DUI and reckless driving.

- At 2:18 p.m. Sunday, a Kansas City man died after crashing his 1959 Chevrolet Corvette into a cable guard rail in the median on Interstates 90 at mile marker 71. Archie Smith, 73, died, and his passenger had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol and speed were not factors.

- A motorcyclist from Seattle died after hitting a horse trailer that was turning left on Highway 44 near Interior. Brian Ware, 51, was wearing a helmet when he died, and his passenger received serious but non-life threatening injuries.

- Early Monday, a motorcyclist died in Sturgis after crashing into a wooden fence in a residential yard. Todd Hay, 47, of Deland, Fla., was riding on Middle Street when his motorcycle left the road and struck a fence pole. Several people were asleep in tents in the yard, but none was injured.

- Passenger Rose Ann Richard, 63, of Belfield, N.D., died from injuries she sustained Monday when the motorcycle she was riding on collided with a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix on Interstate 90 three miles west of Sturgis. Richard and the driver of the motorcycle, 63-year-old Roger Richard of Belfield, N.D., were both thrown from the motorcycle. Roger Richard had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Pontiac, 19-year-old Nickolas Hartwell of Rapid City, was arrested for DUI, zero tolerance and reckless driving.

- In Custer State Park on Monday, John Rowlett Jr. of Wichita, Kan., died when he lost control of his motorcycle on South Dakota 87 at around 4 p.m. The 42-year-old collided with a rock and his motorcycle landed in a ditch. Rowlett was not wearing a helmet and died as a result of his injuries.

Injury accidents on Wednesday

At 9:58 a.m., at 12199 US 14A, east of Deadwood, James Lewis, 57, Pleasant Hill, CA was driving a motorcycle and pulled out in front of a vehicle driven by Shannon Burke, 49, Sturgis. Lewis suffered a serious non-life threatening injury. He was not wearing a helmet. Burke was not injured.

At 11:09 a.m., SD 34, mm 34, four miles east of Belle Fourche, Robert Reiter, 71, Laurel, MT was driving a vehicle east on SD 34 when his vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane. Two oncoming motorcycles went into the ditch to avoid the vehicle. One motorcycle driver, Donald Tipton, 42, Augusta KS, suffered minor injuries. His passenger, Anne Tipton, 35, Augusta, KS sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Both were wearing helmets. Reiter was cited for careless driving.

At 11:40 a.m., SD 44, mm 85, a motorcycle driven by Sean Halley, 41, Riverview, FL was westbound on SD 44. A second motorcycle, driven by Robert Allen, 38, Atkinson, NH was traveling west behind Halley. Halley said he swerved to miss oncoming motorcycles and collided with Allen’s motorcycle. Halley suffered minor injuries and his passenger, Mindy Halley, 35, Riverview FL, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Allen was not injured and his passenger, Chana Muse, 28, Altamonte Springs, FL, received minor injuries. Allen was cited for no proof of insurance.

At about noon, on US 212, mm 35, Michael Savage, 65, Berthoud, CO was driving east on US 212 when a westbound vehicle crossed the center line and collided with Savage’s motorcycle. Both motorcycles were kept upright and the second motorcycle left the scene. Savage sustained minor injuries. Speed and alcohol were not factors for Allen’s vehicle. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:20 p.m., on Vanocker Canyon, mm 12, five miles north of Sturgis. William Marzahan, 69, Coventry, RI, lost control of his motorcycle going around a curve. He suffered minor injuries.

AT 12:52 p.m., on I-90, mm 98, one mile east Wasta, Edward Helker, 63, Middletown, DE, lost control of his motorcycle. He was thrown from his motorcycle into the rear end of a semi-tractor/trailer that was ahead of him. Helker sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet

At 1:36 p.m., US 85, mm 35, two miles south of Lead, Samuel Shaffer, 54, Kadoka, SD was driving his pickup south on US 14A when the front wheel assembly came off the truck, crossed into the northbound traffic and struck the two occupants on a motorcycle. Both the driver, Dale Nettleton, 53, Mount Carmel, IL and passenger Debra Nettleton, no age listed, Mount Carmel, IL, received serious non-life threatening injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet. Schaffer sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

At 3:34 p.m., on US Highway 14A, mm35, west of Lead, Michael Garcia, Sr., 29, Las Cruces, NM, was driving a motorcycle west on US Highway 14A. He failed to negotiate a curve and collided with an eastbound motorcycle driven by Pete Kilpatrick, 48, Nazareth, PA. Kilpatrick suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Garcia and his passenger, Esther Garcia, 26, Las Cruces, NM, received minor injuries. Helmets were not worn. Michael Garcia was arrested for reckless driving and grand theft of a firearm. Speed was a factor in the crash; alcohol was not.

At 3:44 p.m., SD 34, mm 4, six miles west of Belle Fourche, Dale Frey, 46, Maryville, IL was driving a motorcycle east on SD 34 and rear-ended a motorcycle driven by Francis Davish, 61, Ocean City, NJ, which had slowed down to make a left turn. Frey was not injured and was cited for careless driving. Davish received minor injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet.

At 4:02 p.m., on BLM road in Sturgis, Robert Gustafson, 46, Vermillion, SD, was driving a vehicle and failed to negotiate a turn and rolled down a steep embankment. He was treated for minor injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

At 4:15 p.m., on US 385, mm 113, eight miles south of Deadwood, Dominic Icovoni, 22, Denver ,CO was driving a motorcycle southbound on US Highway 385 when he lost control and went across the center line. He collided with a northbound motorcycle driven by Mark Lyons, 45, Loveland, CO. Icovoni, Lyons and a passenger on the second motorcycle, Cindy Lyons, 47, Loveland, CO, received minor injuries. Icovoni was charged with DUI.

At 4:55 p.m., on US 16A, mm 41, Bernard Mauk, 65, Pleasant Hill, IA was driving a motorcycle west, failed to negotiate a turn and left the roadway. The driver was separated from the motorcycle. Mauck sustained minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 5 p.m., on I-90, mm 190, one mile west of Murdo, Jennifer Treece, 28, Hazel Green, AK and Susan Locke, 42, Umatillo, FL, were traveling east in the head-to-head construction west of Murdo when the highway switched back out of the construction. The two motorcycles collided while swerving to miss another motorcycle (SEE NEXT NARRATIVE). Treece sustained minor injuries. Treece was wearing a helmet.

At about 5 pm. on I-90, mm 190, two miles west of Murdo, Roberto Rodriguez, 58, Orlando, FL was driving a motorcycle east on I-90 when he lost control leaving a construction zone. He suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. A helmet was used. Alcohol was not a factor.

At 6:26 p.m., on south Rockerville Road near Safe Haven Place, Harvinder Dhindsa, 42, Calgary, Alberta Canada lost control of his motorcycle while taking a curve. He received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 8:05 p.m., on I-90, mm 51, two miles east of Summerset, Adam Moore, 44, Grand Valley Ontario, Canada lost control of his motorcycle in the rain and struck a second motorcycle. Moore suffered minor injuries. The two occupants on the second motorcycle were not injured. No helmets were used..

At 10:18 p.m., on north Rochford Road, John Best, 49, Riley, NY, lost control of his motorcycle. Best and the passenger, Sally Best, 47, Riley, NY, suffered minor injuries. Alcohol and speed were not factors. Helmets were not used.

At 11:23 p.m., at the intersection of Lazelle Street and Junction Avenue in Sturgis, Jared Kemp, 26, Lake Worth, FL was driving a motorcycle at the intersection when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Alexander Hodge, 20, Rapid City, SD. Kemp suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. Hodge was cited for failing to yield. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

At 1:59 a.m. Thursday, on Vanocker Canyon Road, John Elton, 48, Santa Fe, TX swerved to miss a deer and lost control of his motorcycle. He suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. A helmet was used. Elton was charged with DUI and careless driving.
