Detective Inspector Brian Swan said Lionel Patea, a 24-year-old former Bandidos sergeant-at-arms was charged today, and the charges may be upgraded if the victim's condition worsens.
Tara Brown, 24, is in a critical condition after the shocking incident and family members have travelled from New Zealand to see her.
"The advice we've been given by medical staff is they don't expect her to survive her injuries," Detective Inspector Swan said.
The couple were involved in a relationship but police confirmed a temporary protection order was put in place last week for the woman's safety.
DI Swan said the woman’s car crashed into a Macquarie Avenue yard about 8.45am yesterday, before her attacker allegedly assaulted her with what witnesses described as a piece of metal.
"We understand that he was waiting at the child care centre (for the woman)," he said.
Police have released footage of the young mother being run off the road in an appeal for more witnesses to come forward.
DI Swan said some "very courageous" witnesses had tried to intervene in the alleged assault.
Mr Patea was taken into custody after the incident when he arrived at the Coomera police complex with what police say were self-inflicted stab wounds.
He was also charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle at a bed side hearing at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
