BN- Leo Eddy Hunt pleaded guilty to three counts of trafficking in a controlled drug and one count of possessing a firearm without a licence.
He was caught with methylamphetamines and cash in 2008 when police stopped his car and later searched his Adelaide apartment.
Sentencing Hunt in the South Australian District Court today, Judge Dean Clayton said he had been told it was the man's marriage problems which led to him first using drugs and then dealing to pay for his addiction.
"I was told that you commenced using methylamphetamine following matrimonial difficulties," Judge Clayton told Hunt.
"Those matrimonial difficulties have caused you to receive a great deal of publicity because the third person is a well-known former AFL footballer."
Judge Clayton said Hunt's defence counsel had asked for any jail sentence to be suspended.
The court was told that Hunt had been a street dealer and that he was no longer involved with drugs.
But the judge said street dealers played an important part in the distribution of drugs.
"Without such persons, the drug trade could not exist," he said.
