BN- WILDWOOD — Authorities arrested a member of a motorcycle club and charged him with weapons offenses after a disturbance between two groups involving about 100 people at Wildwood's annual motorcycle weekend.
A Delaware man affiliated with one of the clubs was charged with weapons offenses after an incident outside a Wawa Sept. 12, County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Wildwood Police Chief Robert Regalbuto said in a release Monday.
Chad B. Johnson, a 27-year-old Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club Member, from Penfield Drive in Newark Delaware, was arrested without incident during the Roar to the Shore Motor Cycle Rally.
Detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and Wildwood patrol officers saw about 100 members of the Wheels of Soul as they entered the city and rode past the Binns Hotel, at 3900 Atlantic Avenue, authorities said.
For the past several years, members of the Pagan’s Motorcycle Club have rented numerous rooms at the hotel, according to several sources.
According to law enforcement a brief, non-violent incident occurred between the Wheels of Soul and the Pagan's Motor Cycle Clubs.
The two clubs have clashed several times in recent years, according to numerous news sources, sometimes violently. Both are described as “outlaw” motorcycle clubs by numerous law enforcement agencies, although the local authorities did not describe ether club in those terms on Monday. No more detailed description of the “brief, non-violent incident,” but witnesses described shouting and a strong police presence. One witness said police had shotguns.
After police disbursed the two groups, members of the Wheels of Soul gathered at the Wawa at 400 West block of Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood. While at the Wawa, Wildwood detectives observed Johnson in possession of what turned out to be a loaded .38 caliber handgun, according to officials. Johnson was also found in possession of brass knuckles and a knife.
Bail was set at $105,000 full cash and he was taken to the Cape May County jail in lieu of bail.
Taylor commended the cooperative efforts between the members of the Wildwood Police Department and the Prosecutor's Office.
