BIKER NEWS -- Fifteen motorcycles led the way for approximately 50 members of Omaha motorcycle clubs on a “Turkey Run” on Saturday.
“It all started with my grandfather (Ron Beverly, president of Eazin’ Thunder Motorcycle Club),” Michael Beverly Jr. said.
“He wanted to shine light on the fact that not only charitable organizations can give back to the community, but motorcyclists can, too.”
This was the fifth year that Eazin’ Thunder Motorcycle Club joined seven other clubs to purchase turkeys for the less fortunate.
“It’s the greatest event of the year,” said Eazin’ Thunder member Bryan Mattox. “The weather may be cold outside, but we are warm inside.”
Motorcycle club members headed to Target, where they purchased 186 turkeys. Four customers shopping at the store even donated $230 to members to buy turkeys.
Each year, the clubs vote on a different church to serve.
This year, it was Morning Star Baptist Church at 2019 Burdette St. After purchasing the turkeys, the motorcycle club members went to the church to give out meal packages to 136 people.
Each person received a 12- to 16-pound turkey along with stuffing and canned vegetables provided by the church.
“A lot of people have needs but don’t show it,” said Karen Coleman, a member of the church. “The motorcycle clubs saw a need and were able to provide the turkeys. ... It’s really great.”
The church members will hand out the remaining turkeys for Christmas.
“We don’t want anything in return,” Beverly said. “We just want to show that there are people with hearts out there.”
